6 Ways To Get AEW Back On Track

All Your Wrestling By All Your Wrestling 4 Sep 2024 5 min read

When AEW kicked off in 2019, it was the cool alternative to WWE that many fans had been longing for. The general consensus is that over the past year or so, AEW has lost its way. Although they do still have banger matches, there are some problems to deal with.

Here, we look at 6 ways AEW could get itself back on track.

1. Unify AEW International Championship & AEW Continental Championship at this year’s Continental Classic Tournament

Even though I have loved the booking of AEW International Championship & Continental Championship this year but I do agree that there are ‘too many’ championships in AEW. LOL! However, there are literal purpose and gimmicks in all of this championships such as the the Continental Title is defended under C2 Rules whereas the International Title is defended outside of AEW and indies. But I think this year both of this championships have been elevated equally and they should be unified into undisputed AEW Intercontinental Championship and retain the rules & gimmicks of it precursors.

2. Rename the AEW TNT & TBS Championship as AEW World Television Championship and AEW Women’s Television Championship

Ever since the title was announced, I have been very critical of it being called as the ‘TNT Title’. Look I do get it that they decided to name it after the network channel however what if in near future AEW programming is headed to a different platform ? Are they still gonna keep the AEW TNT Championship or retire and introduce a new title ? Lol! It’s better if they rename those titles and even maybe give them a new look overall.

3. AEW World Trios Championship and the division to be the main focus of AEW Collision

aew trios

I like how in recent times, few titles such as World Trios Titles have been consistently being a prize factor on AEW Collision and I think the trios division can do wonders on Saturday Nights! You can build up and have storylines based on those titles in that show to bring that exclusive factor into the show and even having top stables fighting over it especially in recent times when all of the AEW top factions like BCC, Bang Bang Gang, The Patriarchy, House Of Blacks, etc. have been feuding over it and now that the BCC are the champions there is no perfect time than now to make the move happen.

4. Rules & Regulations on title defenses and champions

There have been recent cases of champions not defending their titles for ages and it doesn’t matter whether it’s a generational talent or even underdog babyface, A CHAMPIONSHIP SHOULD BE DEFENDED ONCE IN A MONTH! At least. Remember WWE had rules of 30 days restrictions on title defenses ? And if the champion fail to defend his title they would be force to relinquish it ? It was not executed properly but I think AEW can easily turn this into a part of their programming as CODE OF ELITE i.e. AEW World Championship, AEW Women’s World Championship, AEW Tag Team Championship, AEW World Trios Championship, AEW Continental Championship, and lastly AEW International Championship all should be subjected to be defended once in a month and if any of the champions fail to do so they will be stripped off their titles. As far as the TNT & TBS Titles goes they should be defended on a weekly basis on their respective channels such as the TBS Title should be on Dynamite while the TNT Title on Collision.

5. Time Limit on championship matches

  • Each title in AEW need to have a specific time limit duration during matches and this is how old NWA/WCW championship matches used to work and I’ll show you how it can work now (I know AEW do have the concept of time limit for their matches and I like that)

AEW World/Women’s World/ World Tag Team Championship – 60 Mins

AEW TNT/TBS Championship – 20 Mins(weekly shows) and 30 Mins(special occasions or PPV)

AEW International Championship – 30 Mins

AEW Continental Championship – 30 Mins

AEW World Trios Championship – 45 Mins

6. Relaunch the tag team division

The Tag Team division has been quite stale now for some months and could use a relaunch. It used to be the cream of AEW with amazing matches but this year it has taken a back seat. Is that due to the Bucks? Well, that won’t be debated here. This is how I would do it.

Let’s start the relaunch with an 8-team tournament and freshen up the division. The teams I would include:

Grizzled Young Veterans vs The Acclaimed (GYV with the win and Acclaimed split afterwards).

The Outrunners vs MXM Collection

The Gunn Club vs Top Flight

Takeshita & Fletcher vs Roddy Strong & Kyle O’Reilly (reunited)

Alongside this, you could run a program with some other tag-teams who aren’t in the tournament but are just causing mayhem. Have FTR go crazy and try to decimate the Conglomoration and have a build to a match of FTR vs Orange & Briscoe. Just something a little different.

Could also have the Bucks pissed at this tournament that was authorised by Tony Khan, so each week they have a tag-team match and show why they are the best team. Each week they will pick up the win, up until the final match at the PPV in which they drop the belts.
