The Pro Wrestling Rant (Feb 10)

Nick Whitworth

I’m not the greatest in math but how come Monday to Friday is 3 weeks long yet Saturday to Sunday is 35 minutes? The weeks/weekends aren’t mathing here.

Anyways, I woke up this cold-ass Nova Scotian morning feeling quite ranty so there is only one cure for that and that is to RANT. Let’s go

The 2025 John Cena Farewell Tour

John Cena has officially kicked off his retirement tour, one of which I am not ready for. I understand with his age and his growing movie commitments WWE has been on the back burner. He literally has done it all.

An insane amount of World Championship runs, numerous secondary championships, tag team championships, Money in the Bank winner, 2-time winner of the Royal Rumble and a major box office draw for the company. That doesn’t include outside the ring like his consistent work with children’s charities. An all-round Champion.

At the 2025 Royal Rumble when it came down to the final 2, Cena and Jey Uso, it seemed like WWE was going in the direction of John headlining this year’s Wrestlemania. SWERVE… He was eliminated.

rant

Fans became quite vocal online, which shows how passionate his fans are, but we all forgot a little something here. This is John’s farewell tour, and you know darn well he has 100% control over all things involving it this year. So, John being eliminated by Jey was Cena giving him a rub, letting fans know he views Uso as “the guy”.

Going forward John is going to face who he wants to face, whether new matchups or rekindled ones, it will be what he wants and how he wants. John is the most selfless person there is so he doesn’t plan to hog all of the spotlight as he would rather give back to the business that gave him the platform to be who he is today.

Win, lose, hold championships, etc, it will be all what John wants and not what will earn him the most money.

Look, I get it. John can be at times corny, cheesy, however you want to put it. Facts are facts and Cena is a major draw but put that aside and look at the bigger picture here. The millions and millions of children who idolize him, those who view “Never Give Up” as more than a catchphrase, the ones who he makes forget about their struggles for the short time they see him and the power he has in adding love to those who feel defeated.

Let’s also talk about Stu the cameraman as well. Each wrestler has their schtick for when they break the curtain, but John takes the time to acknowledge and have a quick little personal catch with the cameraman. He recognizes one of the many unsung heroes in WWE and that quick little gesture he does every time he steps on that entrance ramp shows how he values all those involved.

So, matchups… Who should he face? Well, that question should only be up to the GOAT himself. Truthfully, I think he will tackle more of the newer talent and add in some “one more time” matches against the likes of Orton or AJ Styles but with the main focus on elevating the business.

He doesn’t have to win every match or feud. You can be a winner even if you lose. Many have walked away a bigger star even though they were defeated. Yes, wins-loses matter but if the match clicks with the audience the right way, then both win. This will happen on this tour more often than not by which John will elevate his opponent more than he himself will be.

While I am one to enjoy just sitting back and enjoying the ride and let the stories play out, this one I am quite adamant about…. John needs to win the World Championship one more time…. It needs to be at his last match, and he needs to retire as champion. 100% needs to happen.

Retiring as champion is a major deal and something that should rarely happen. This case fits the mold. John led the company during some massive highs and massive lows. He always was relied on to do damage control when shit hit the fan.

The company knew John’s words meant more to the people than anyone else in the company so they sent him out to answer these tough questions because the audience would listen.

He was and still is a marketing dream and money-making machine. His resume both in and out of the ring will be unmatchable and arguably never matched. Whether you’re a kid, adult, struggling with any type of hardship or simply just watching some wrestling, John Cena has touched you deep inside your heart. He made you forget everything and gave us all the power to keep going. He wouldn’t let any of us give up.

So whether you agree or disagree with me here that is fine but having him end his Hall of Fame career with the biggest championship the company has is not only the right thing to do here but it is what is best for business. Why? Because he has done more for the business than anyone else.

Recent WWE releases

Over this past weekend WWE went on their typical release shenanigans. I find with them, when they release talent, they do it in large groups which creates more of a negative vibe around it all. Anyways, this weekend was no different and rumors are the company isn’t done yet either.

When a release happens, it sucks. Truly it does. It doesn’t mean the talent (s) aren’t good enough, just means the company’s current vision doesn’t include them. In sports, this kind of stuff happens all the time. Some are demoted to the minor leagues while most are traded.

Trades give the players a new lease on life. With wrestling there is too big of an ego to officially do “trades” but when a talent is released it is great for the overall business.

Whether the wrestler signs with a major company, heads to Japan or overseas or just does the independent scene, they have a ton of options which will give them more money. Typically, when WWE releases talent they leave with a nice amount of buzz surrounding them. While it sucks to be let go from your dream job, you leave a bigger name and with more demand from other companies and fans alike.

While WWE likes to build its own stars from the ground up, just go through their current roster and tell me how many of them are true homegrown stars? Pretty slim eh. Whether it’s through TNA, AEW, NJPW or the independent scene, they were signed with an already large following.

Don’t believe me then check out the response current TNA Champ Joe Hendry received at this year’s Rumble, or look at the pop Jordynne Grace received at last year’s Rumble or the reactions to Jade Cargill. My point is WWE isn’t the be-all and end-all.

With WWE’s current working relationships with other companies, I wouldn’t be surprised if a few go to AEW. Besides the obvious of Cedric Alexander and possibly The Good Brothers being AEW bound, I’d bet talent like Blair Davenport, Giovanni Vinci and Isla Dawn are TNA bound, especially with the latter losing names like Jordynne Grace, Speedball Mike Bailey and Josh Alexander and the beautiful relationship between the two companies.

Being released doesn’t mean Triple H and his team don’t view these as stars, but rather time is money. You know darn well they were released to garner more attention, then they will be back. It’ll be an easier transition for both companies (TNA & WWE) to use some of these superstars.

I know WWE could always “lend talent” to TNA but it is easier to release them and have them spend a few years there before coming back.

I know AEW will come in hot and heavy with contracts but if I were any of these wrestlers, I would keep my eyes open. We all know how AEW is hoarding talent (trust me, I know WWE does this as well) but with the current views on the company involving former and current talent currently unhappy with how the backstage environment is, money isn’t everything.

Like I said about Cedric and Gallows & Anderson being AEW bound, they have stories already in place where they could jump into right this second so that move should honestly happen but for Gallows & Anderson I think a TNA run would better suit them for they will get TV time plus can be used to really boost their tag team division. Whereas they’d do the same they are doing now in WWE by just sitting at home (not at first though, maybe after 6 months).

While fans get upset when this stuff happens just remember, being released isn’t a bad thing but it is rather a fantastic thing. A refresh is the way to keep your career relevant. Don’t believe me? I am sure Matt Cardona; oops I mean Zack Ryder would agree with me.

Well, that is all I have for now. It was -12 degrees Celsius (don’t even Fahrenheit me here) this morning so I am frozen to the bones and need to go grab a coffee. Until next time keep supporting us here as we have been spending a lot of time behind the scenes on ways to grow and ways to continue putting out raw, unscripted, professional and passionate material. We appreciate it all. Jesus, I got a little emotional there, that’s not a good look for my gimmick…. Shit, Fuck… There, back to normal.
