Will Brock Lesnar Really Retire?

When it comes to shocks and surprises, no pro wrestling company comes close to WWE. Whether it’s surprise appearances, surprise returns, or even surprise retirements, WWE has done it all. Speaking of retirements, when it comes to superstars retiring from the company, most of the action comes with an in-ring announcement from the supposed retiree. This, sometimes, happens after a superstar loses a “Career on the Line” match, for example, Ric Flair’s retirement speech in 2008 after losing to Shawn Michaels.

There have been times, although few, when superstars have had to shock the public and retire impromptu without giving prior hints. Times like when The Undertaker broke character and placed his iconic trench coat, hat, and MMA gloves in the center of the ring and vanished in a smoke after losing his main-event match against Roman Reigns in 2017 at WrestleMania 33.

Another of these moments happened most recently in April 2026, at WrestleMania 42, when Brock Lesnar lost to Oba Femi. Brock’s impromptu retirement at WrestleMania 42 is still being talked about to this day, and this is largely because his actions since WrestleMania have now begged the question of whether Brock will really retire.

Brock Lesnar Wasn’t Scheduled To Retire At WrestleMania

Before we dive into Brock Lesnar’s initial, scheduled retirement date, let’s take a quick look at Brock’s WWE career and how he announced his retirement at WrestleMania.

Brock debuted in WWE in 2002, but left in 2004 in search of greener pastures, which he later found in the UFC in 2008. In 2012, Brock returned to WWE, and although his tenure in the company has been on a part-time basis, he remains one of the biggest names in the company to date. Now, as mentioned earlier, Brock lost his match against Oba at WrestleMania 42, but here’s the shocker; after the match, “The Beast Incarnate” broke character by not just crying, but also unlacing his wrestling boots, removing his signature MMA gloves, and placing them on the canvas (a move that 99% of the time means retirement in the world of pro-wrestling).

Here’s what most WWE fans don’t know. Last December, John Cena revealed in an interview with Chris Van Vliet that Brock would be retiring at SummerSlam 2026. This means that Brock’s retirement date has already been set, and that Brock’s actions at Mania was not part of the plan. But then, after claiming to have retired at WrestleMania, Brock still returned to wrestle Oba for the second time on May 31st at WWE Clash in Italy, where he secured the victory. That move could easily be interpreted as Brock not wanting his last match to be one where he was the loser.

Even after defeating Oba at Clash in Italy, both Brock and Oba (who is the 2026 WWE King of the Ring) are still at each other’s throats, and as such, both men are scheduled to settle their issues once and for all in a “Hell in a Cell” match at WWE SummerSlam. Recently, it’s been rumored that this SummerSlam, which will be taking place in August 2026 at Minneapolis, Minnesota’s U.S. Bank Stadium will mark The Beast’s final match. Then again, there’s a possibility that it might not be “The Beast’s” last chapter.

Will Brock Lesnar Stay Retired?

The real question is, even if Brock retires at SummerSlam, will he stay retired?

This is because, WWE can boast of legendary superstars that seemingly “retired” in the past only to return to in-ring action for “one more match” whenever a younger superstar challenges them. Many times, these “one more matches” result in the supposed retiree signing a new contract with WWE, and before you know it, they’re back in action. A refresher course would be the legendary Trish Stratus.

Trish retired for the first time in 2006, but during the first ever Women’s Evolution PLE which premiered in 2018, Trish teamed up with her long time friend Lita, against the team of Mickie James and Alicia Fox. In 2019, Trish accepted the challenge to face Charlotte Flair in a “Generation vs. Generation” match at SummerSlam. That wasn’t even the last time Trish stepped into the ring. She returned to the ring in 2023, and 2025, too. Other legends that retired but had to step back into the squared circle for one reason or the other are; Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, and The Undertaker.

It is not rocket science that wrestlers love their career much more than wrestling fans love watching the show, which is why they can’t seem to resist the itch to return to the ring. For someone like Brock (who, despite being a part-timer, is a great wrestler) if he eventually retires at SummerSlam, will he really stay retired? Or will he put his boots on again for a “one more match” if the event calls for it? I think the best response to this is, ‘let’s wait and see.’
