Biography
For more than a decade Sami Zayn was WWE's ultimate underdog, the man fans cheered precisely because he never quite reached the summit. In 2026 he finally got there, and then broke the hearts of the people who carried him. The Montreal favourite is now a two-time Undisputed WWE Champion and a calculating heel on SmackDown, heading to Crown Jewel in November to face Roman Reigns.
Born in Laval, Quebec, to Syrian parents, Rami Sebei debuted in 2002 and soon found fame under a mask as El Generico, the cheerful 'generic luchador' from Tijuana. Generico became a legend of the independent boom: a two-time PWG World Champion, a five-time PWG tag champion, an ROH World Tag Team Champion and ROH Television Champion, plus title reigns in wXw and DDT, where he won the KO-D Openweight Championship in 2012. His story was intertwined with that of Kevin Steen, his partner and bitter rival, and their unsanctioned Fight Without Honor at Final Battle 2010 became one of ROH's defining feuds.
Signing with WWE in 2013, he lost the mask, became Sami Zayn and turned NXT into his stage. After a long chase he beat Adrian Neville for the NXT Championship at TakeOver: R Evolution in December 2014, only for the debuting Kevin Owens to powerbomb him on the apron moments later, reigniting the rivalry in WWE. Injuries slowed his rise on the main roster, but he became a four-time Intercontinental Champion, the first of those reigns coming in 2020, and a gifted heel during his 'brothers' run with Owens.
His career peak arrived via The Bloodline. Accepted as an 'Honorary Uce' in 2022, he turned on Roman Reigns at the 2023 Royal Rumble, challenged him in front of his home crowd in Montreal, and then won the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles with Owens in the main event of WrestleMania 39 in a match rated five stars by Dave Meltzer. A year later, at WrestleMania XL, he ended Gunther's record 666-day Intercontinental reign. In 2025 he won the United States title and ran a weekly open challenge, and also fought Owens in a five-star unsanctioned match at Elimination Chamber.
In 2026, after falling short against Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble and losing a second US title reign to Trick Williams at WrestleMania 42, Zayn began calling himself 'The Last Real Good Guy' amid a growing backlash. He beat Cody Rhodes and Gunther at Night of Champions in June to win the Undisputed WWE Championship, becoming WWE's 36th Triple Crown Champion, but lost it to CM Punk nine days later. Then came the turn: on 21 August he cost Owens a title shot, and on 11 September in Mexico City he took the title back from Punk with help from Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae and Owens. With Crown Jewel set for 7 November, Zayn and World Heavyweight Champion Reigns will meet in a champion-versus-champion match.
