Biography
Kazuchika Okada is widely regarded as one of the finest wrestlers of his generation, and in autumn 2026 he is AEW International Champion for the second time and a leading figure in the Don Callis Family. The Rainmaker spent most of his career as the face of New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he rewrote the record books, before jumping to AEW in 2024.
Trained by Último Dragón, Okada debuted in Mexico in 2004 and joined the NJPW dojo in 2007. After a spell as a young lion he was sent to TNA in 2010 on a learning excursion that brought little television time beyond a stint as Samoa Joe's masked sidekick Okato, but he later credited the experience with teaching him the value of a character.
That lesson produced the Rainmaker. Returning in January 2012 with a flashy new persona and Gedo as his mouthpiece, he stunned Japan by beating Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship within weeks, then won the G1 Climax that summer, breaking the record for the tournament's youngest winner. His rivalry with Tanahashi defined NJPW's boom years, and his fourth title reign, which began in June 2016, ran for a record 720 days with 12 successful defences.
That reign also contained the series with Kenny Omega that made Okada a global name. Their Wrestle Kingdom 11 main event in January 2017 drew six stars from Dave Meltzer, and their no-time-limit, two-out-of-three-falls decider at Dominion in June 2018 earned seven, the highest rating Meltzer has ever given. Okada finished his NJPW run with seven IWGP heavyweight title reigns and four G1 Climax wins, and entered the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame in 2021.
Leaving New Japan in early 2024, he signed with AEW and immediately turned heel by siding with The Elite, beating Eddie Kingston for the Continental Championship that March. He won the 2024 Continental Classic, then defeated Omega at All In 2025 to merge the Continental and International titles and become the only AEW Unified Champion, joining Don Callis along the way. His Continental reign finally ended at a record 647 days when Jon Moxley beat him at Worlds End 2025.
Weeks later Okada returned to Tokyo to beat Tanahashi in his retirement match at Wrestle Kingdom 20 on 4 January 2026. Back in AEW he briefly held the Trios titles with Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis, lost the International Championship to Konosuke Takeshita at Double or Nothing and won it back at All In in August. He has since fended off Tommaso Ciampa at All Out, but fell short against Will Ospreay for the AEW World Championship at Grand Slam France and again in the Clockwork Carnage match at WrestleDream on 17 October 2026.
