Biography
El Grande Americano is the reigning AAA Mega Champion and, improbably, one of the most beloved figures in lucha libre. A character that began life in 2025 as a WWE joke about an American trying to master Mexican wrestling has become a genuine crowd favourite south of the border, headlining Triplemanía and winning a mask match that Dave Meltzer rated among the finest spectacles of all time. Billed these days from Tangamandapio, a knowing nod to the classic sitcom El Chavo del Ocho, he enters to 'Cielito Lindo', cuts his promos in Spanish and professes his love for Pedro Infante and El Santo.
The mask first appeared on Raw on 10 March 2025, when Chad Gable, who had spent weeks losing to luchadores and vowing to learn their craft, attacked Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio in an American-themed hood. Named El Grande Americano a fortnight later, the character won a tournament for a shot at the WWE Speed Championship and took the title from Dragon Lee in a match that aired on 7 May, using a mask loaded with a metal plate to set up the diving headbutt that has been his trademark finish ever since.
When Gable suffered a genuine rotator cuff injury in June 2025, the character carried on, with Ludwig Kaiser widely reported to be behind the mask. This version began appearing for WWE's sister promotion AAA that summer, formed Los Americanos with Rayo Americano and Bravo Americano, and won over Mexican crowds who had seen Gable's version as a mockery of their traditions. The Speed Championship reign finally ended on NXT on 11 November 2025 when Jasper Troy beat him, closing a combined run of 190 days.
The story took a twist at the Royal Rumble on 31 January 2026, when Gable returned as 'The Original' El Grande Americano and eliminated his replacement, branding him an impostor. In March the newer Americano won the 2026 Rey de Reyes four-way final over The Original, La Parka and Santos Escobar, and the feud built to a Máscara contra Máscara match at Noche de Los Grandes in Monterrey on 30 May. He won, and Gable unmasked in the ring and handed the identity over for good. Meltzer awarded the match five and three-quarter stars, it drew more than two million YouTube views, and the mask he wore that night later sold at auction for over US$50,000.
On the second night of Triplemanía 34 in Mexico City on 13 September 2026, El Grande Americano defeated Dominik Mysterio in a No Disqualification match to win the AAA Mega Championship. Dominik has since earned a rematch, and the two are booked to meet again at Héroes Inmortales on 24 October as Americano begins his first defence of AAA's top prize.
