Welcome back to the WWE weekly review. We are coming off a rather mid Night of Champions event, heading towards a pretty stacked week for wrestling next week. AEW are having their massive All In show in Texas, so WWE are combating it with 3 bloody PLE events (if you include SNME). Thanks WWE for making my week a lot busier.
Night of Champions saw Cody Rhodes and Jade Cargill predictably win the KOTR and QOTR tournaments. We also saw Solo Sikoa win the US championship thanks to a returning Tanga Loa and a debuting Tala Tonga, FKA Hikuleo. In the main event, John Cena showed signs of being a good guy again but maintained his heel status to retain.
How will WWE move forward from this? Well there is only one way to find out.
Let’s get crackin’ with the knackin’.
WWE RAw – 30th June from Pittsburgh, PA

Highlights
Monday Night Mami
Rhea Ripley opens the show hoping that her feud with the Judgement Day is finally over for good. Before she can continue, Iyo Sky interrupts. Both of these women are so over with the crowd.
Iyo says that there can not be an Evolution without her. She says that Mami is not on top, not without a world championship. Iyo says that she has a title match for Evolution and she can choose who she defends against. She wants to face the best and she wants to face Rhea Ripley.
Rhea respects Iyo, but warns her she will stop at nothing to get the title back. She also warns her “what happens at Evolution…that is what you wanted.” Rhea accepts the challenge.
A fine segment to set up the title match. There doesn’t need to be much extra story than this. Just two of the best women’s wrestlers trying to be on top.
Doctors Orders
I am a huge fan of Dominik Mysterio trying to delay his match with AJ Styles by not being cleared to wrestle. I am not sure if this is a worked shoot, or just a storyline, but I am enjoying it.
Pro tip for AJ Styles. Take off your reading glasses before trying to sound tough. It doesn’t look intimidated at all.
It’s a Judgement Day, Yes it Is
The opening match of the night sees Finn Balor and JD McDonagh defeat the New Day to bring the world tag championships back to the Judgement Day.
A peculiar heel vs heel match but Balor & JD played the roles of babyface for the purpose of this match. It was quite refreshing to see them in the good guy roles. This was a lot of fun, all 4 men brought a lot of fire into this match. I think they are trying to prove just how fun and exciting tag wrestling can be if they are given time to actually work on the show.
There was a great near fall when Xavier Woods rolled up Balor after hitting to Coup de Grace on JD by mistake, then an even better one when Balor kicked out of the Midnight Hour. Woods then uses the titles for a cheap shot and Balor kicks out again! Some great babyface fire from Finn.
JD hits Woods with a moonsault, Balor follows up with the Coup de Grace to defeat the New Day. They pose with Mysterio after the match, displaying all their gold. It is crazy how the Judgement Day have been around for over 3 years and still feel fresh and enjoyable to watch. This match was a great one. I have some thoughts about the booking.
Highlight Reel
I love a good musical video package and WWE are the best at doing it.
We got a great mini highlight reel of Goldberg’s career and biggest moments in WWE and WCW, as well as him preparing to wrestle Gunther in his retirement match.
I actually love that they are giving this all the bells and whistles of it being his final match. Goldberg is a controversial figure, but he deserves to go out on his terms on a high.
Predictably awesome
I think everyone got a little excited seeing Rusev and Sheamus booked for this week’s Raw. Two brawlers who can be relied on to deliver a great match. I had no doubts that this would be awesome and surprise surprise, this kicked ass.
These two physical specimens beat the piss and vinegar out of each other. They got plenty of time too, 20 minutes to remind everyone just how good they both are. Rusev is in charge at one point and Sheamus just gradually keeps screaming “hit me you bitch, come on!” getting louder and louder. I loved seeing Rusev kick out at 1 after Sheamus starts hitting a comeback, that put him over as being incredibly tough.
It felt like as the match went on, the strikes only got stiffer and stiffer. The final third was very back and forth, Sheamus looking a lot more worse for ware but he had Rusev wobbled. A pair of running knee strikes got a great near fall for Sheamus.
Rusev has the Accolade locked in, Sheamus powers up and sends them both tumbling out of the ring to break it, putting over Sheamus’ toughness and the danger of the Accolade. Sheamus hit a Brogue Kick on the outside, both men manage to make it back in before the 10 count. Rusev uses a thumb to the eye and an exposed turnbuckle to the throat before a Matchka Kick to win.
Amazing match with a nice finish that can set up a rematch if they want to. I want it for sure. Rusev looks crafty and dominant, Sheamus looks resilient. Best match on the show.
El Grande Americano
Chad Gable is injured but El Grande Americano is still here! He is looking in great condition too. EGA has gotten significantly taller, more toned and dare I say maybe he looks a bit…German?
I don’t have a clue what they have in store for this new arc for El Grande Americano, now being portrayed by Ludwig Kaiser, but I am 100% all in on whatever this is.
Branching Storylines
Gunther comes out to talk about Bill Goldberg. He is impressed by the music video detailing his career. It was violent, brutal and destructive. Just like his matches, it was summed up in 3 minutes.
Goldberg has the right to claim he was the most dangerous man of his generation, but Gunther is not afraid of what is left. He sees a 58 year old man trying to ride his coattails. He knows Goldberg is not capable of taking the title away from him and he knows he can beat Goldberg in less than 3 minutes.
That is not his goal though. He wants to take his time, blow Goldberg out and embarrass him. Gunther heard Goldberg doesn’t like bullies, well too bad that he bumped into the biggest bully. At SNME, Gunther will bully him and treat him like a piece of crap.
People are asking if Goldberg still has it, Gunther will prove that he never had it. After SNME, people will be asking Gunther “who’s next?” Gunther himself asks who is next, which prompts Seth Rollins to come out with his new custom MITB briefcase. That thang looks gorgeous.
Gunther mocks them for travelling to Saudi Arabia and achieving nothing. Rollins came to congratulate him for being the world champion. Seth says he didn’t fail in Saudi Arabia, he succeeded in his goal. His goal was to make sure that CM Punk will never be a world champion in WWE ever again. Rollins reminds him that he is preparing an all out assault on both world championships.
CM Punk is here and he attacks Rollins. Seth runs away, Gunther grabs at Punk and he shoves him down! LA Knight is behind Rollins eating popcorn in the crowd and they brawl.
This felt like 3 segments rolled into one and it was awesome! Great mic work from Gunther, great teasing by Rollins then great intensity from Punk and Knight. Also, Punk vs Gunther sometime soon? Yes please!
Triple Threat Set up
Another predictable finish here but the match was undeniably good. Bayley vs Lyra Valkyria fight for a shot at the IC championship. Their friendship has been a little strained as of late thanks to their hatred for Becky Lynch.
I think we all knew months back that a Becky Lynch vs Bayley vs Lyra Valkyria match was in the works. I could have called that as far back as Backlash, 2 and a half months ago. Predictability has been a big issue with a lot of Triple H’s booking. I like that things make sense, but the predictable results makes it hard to get invested.
The crowd were a little quiet and I think they were just waiting for the finish, we knew it was either going to be a Becky Lynch run in or a double count out. Something like that. Bayley and Lyra exchanged pinfalls, when the referee made the final pin both women’s shoulders were down for the count and it was a draw. Fair enough I guess.
Both women now brawl at ringside. I feel like this level of hatred has accelerated rather quickly, they were like best pals only a week ago but now they are fighting like bitter enemies.

Plan B
If you remember, Seth Rollins was Plan B for the Authority when they feuded with The Shield. Now Paul Heyman says that Rollins is currently preparing Plan B, which to me suggests that there could be a major heel turn for a 4th man to join Seth Rollins’ faction. We shall see. Anyways, we are not talking about that we are talking about the main event match.
Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker defeated Sami Zayn and Penta. Sami was attacked earlier in the night by Karrion Kross who I guess is not finished with Sami. A weakened Sami, gave him no chance of victory here against Bron Bron. I am loving the Bron-Bron tag team. Just two big powerful dudes willing to beat up anyone.
This was a standard TV main event tag match, elevated by the incredible talent that are in this ring. They also got a solid chunk of time to put on a show, this went for 18 minutes. Sami showed great heart and fire against his behemoth opponents. He was on the receiving end of an assault for a large portion of this match, finally managing a hot tag to Penta to run wild.
Penta got a great near fall on Breakker, countering a press slam into a DDT. In the closing moments of the match Sami is back in and has a great sequence with Bron countering each other’s finishers. Breakker wins for his team with a spear. After the match, Jey Uso comes out and stops Bron-Bron from continuing the punishment on his fellow good guys.
Really fun main event, capping off a pretty great Raw overall.
Lowlights
Worst Tag Title Reign ever?
I don’t blame WWE putting the titles back on the Judgement Day. The last time these championships ever felt worth a damn was when they were holding them. I do blame WWE for that though. They have poorly booked the Raw tag division, it is the worst division in WWE right now. The War Raiders tag reign was bad and meaningless, but I the New Day reign is worse.
They turned on Big E for this. They pulled off one of the best heel turns in recent memory and for what? Some cheap heel heat for weeks on end, a brief feud with the LWO, a mediocre world title win at Wrestlemania and precisely nothing ever since. What a waste of greatness.
The New Day deserved better. They could have had one of their better runs with the titles, but the booking has been a complete let down.
Suddenly Unlikable
I don’t know how they have done it, but Lyra Valkyria is coming off incredibly unlikable now. This follows on from last week when Lyra blatantly fucked Bayley over in her match with Becky Lynch. Now Lyra is charging in having a go and gaslighting Bayley into thinking that she is at fault. HUH? They are clearly trying to set up a triple threat match and I don’t understand how they are struggling to do such a simple thing without making Lyra look like a fool.

Highlights
I Believe
The show opens with Joe Hendry vs Wes Lee, Trick Williams joins commentary for this one. This is a fun opener. The story is that Joe Hendry has to tackle the numbers game with High Ryze at ringside and his Slammiversary opponent Trick Williams not far either. Hendry gets the early flurry, Wes takes control for the middle portion and the valiant babyface gradually fights back. Simple but effective.
Wes hit an impressive 450 splash for a solid near fall. Hendry is just so good at playing to the crowd and making all of his shit look tight. He has the match won but High Ryze gets involved, prompting Mike Santana to run out and even the odds. Hendry hits the Standing Ovation to win the match.
A fun way to start the show and build up TNA Slammiversary some more.
Borne For This
Myles Borne scored a victory over Lexis King in an incredibly fast paced match. They realised that they weren’t getting much time so they made sure to get in as much as they could, but it never felt like they were doing too much.
I really enjoyed this. I think both men worked really hard, but I got to give big props to Lexis King for this one. He has taken some time away and he looks in great condition, shredded and he was performing at such a high standard here. You can tell he has really upped his game since being in NXT.
Borne wins the match with an awkward looking Zig-Zag. I am glad he is using something else other than just a dropkick.
Win For Lainey
Poor Lainey Reid and Thea Hail. They have one thing in common, that they both have GODAWFUL entrance music. It feels offensive to listen to.
This was another short match on a very short episode of NXT. This was fine for what time they got. I didn’t like them doing a cheating pin spot where the referee caught it, only for Lainey to do another cheating pin spot literally 30 seconds later and the referee not notice it. That just makes the referee look shit to me.
Action was solid. They worked hard, brought a lot of intensity. Lainey Reid is new but I like what I am looking at. I see some potential here. She needs new music though please God.
New BFF
Izzi Dame has convinced Tatum Paxley to be her friend, whilst Sol Ruca & Zaria accuse Izzi of manipulating her. This sets up a tag match here and it was a good one. Sol and Zaria are really good as a team, I was unsure of their pairing at first but they have a unique chemistry. Complimentary personalities and good tag team synergy. For a first time pairing, Izzi and Tatum worked well as a team here too. I liked Izzi using Tatum as the bow in a bow and arrow stretch across Zaria in the corner.
Zaria and Sol Ruca fight back into the match, Izzi tries to tag out but Tatums isn’t there. It seems like a win for the North American champion, but Tatum rushes the ring and saves her new friend, Zaria spears Sol by mistake! Izzi hits the sit-out spinebuster and pins the North American champion.
A good match with interesting booking. I am loving the Tatum Paxley storyline and I am loving this Izzi Dame-led Culling.
Yoshiki Steps Up
The main event match saw Yoshiki Inamura defeat Jasper Troy to earn a shot against Oba Femi for the NXT championship at Great American Bash.
This was a very physical war between the giant Troy and the powerful Inamura. Yoshiki shows great strength early on being able to power up Troy for some big suplexes, he even rocked Troy with strikes and sent him out of the ring.
There were some dead moments in the match where Troy is slowly walking around hitting the limited moves that he has. That slowed down the match when it should have been picking up. Inamura had an incredibly hot comeback and he is able to hit his signature splash and win the match.
I was worried they weren’t going to do this but I am glad that it is just Oba Femi vs Inamura for the title.

Glamourous Return
Jordynne Grace comes out ahead of her match next week for the women’s title. She talks about her journey to get here and she speaks vulnerably about doubts that she belongs to be here. Jordynne did everything she could to get here, she couldn’t be ignored anymore. At Evolution, she will beat Jacy Jayne and prove exactly who she is.
Grace is interrupted by Fatal Influence, fronted by the women’s champion. Jayne calls her pitiful. She knows Jordynne can bench press more than her, but she cannot carry the division like she can. Jacy says she is at the top of her game and she is not the most beatable champion in history. Jacy says Grace and Blake Monroe are cut from the same cloth, thinking they can walk in and get what they want.
Jordynne Grace cuts her off and tells her to shut up. She puts over Jacy’s win, but no one is going to be surprised when Jordynne beats her. Fatal Influence attack but Grace is saved by Blake Monroe. Monroe and Grace stand side by side in the ring. Ava comes out and books a tag match for Great American Bash.
Solid promo segment. I cannot help but feel like the Great American Bash lacks any hype or importance thanks to the overload of shows over the weekend and the rushed build for the event.
Lowlights
The End of The Family
Luca Crusifino asks Tony D’Angelo to come out so he can put this all to rest. D’Angelo is still being an untrusting dickhead. Luca talks about how he ditched college and job offers to support Tony in WWE. He dropped everything for him, that is proven loyalty.
Stacks comes out and thanks Luca for helping him win last week, riling Tony up some more. Luca tells Stacks to shut up, before punching Tony in the face. Stacks gets in the ring thinking Luca is with him, but he punches Stacks in the face too. Luca says that he is only for himself now.
After weeks and months of this poorly booked family drama bullshit, this is how it pays off huh? I assume there is probably more, but what a disappointing turn of events. I hope this whole storyline dies soon because I am sick of it.
DarkState
Don’t you just love it when a heel team just tells you things rather than showing or doing things? I know I don’t. Another DarkState promo, this week they conveniently say how people are running around NXT right now doing what they want because they allow it to happen. Oh wow how very nice of you DarkState thank you. They talk about how NXT has been nothing but chaos since they showed up, which I have to disagree with. Then, they say that they are planning to re-appear to cause chaos very soon, but they doubt we know where.
I have two guesses. Great American Bash, or TNA. Where else could they go? The main roster? Don’t make me laugh. I highly doubt it is anywhere other than NXT or TNA I don’t know why they are hyping up a surprise return for this team.
Can ya’ll just kill this weak ass faction already and start again?

WWE Smackdown – 4th July from Pittsburgh, PA

Highlights
We are So Back
LET’S FUCKING GOOOOO 2 HOUR SMACKDOWN WAHOOOOOO.
Thank the lords of all religions. 2 hour wrestling is back. My job got slightly easier and Smackdown got significantly more watchable.
Hot Start
The show opens with Solo Sikoa arriving at the arena ready to celebrate, but Jacob Fatu attacks him and his crew before they can even step out of the car. He shouts and cusses out his foes until security drag him away.
Too short to rate, but this was a perfect start to the show.
King Cody
Cody Rhodes officially opens the show and he shouts out Cam who is attending the show. He is battling leukaemia in a children’s hospital. The crowd go wild for this which was awesome to hear.
Cody Rhodes talks about the journey he has been on to get here. He shouts out former Kings of the Ring and talks about the symbolism of the crown. It stands for where he has been and where he is going. He has a date with John Cena at Summerslam. Cody is interrupted by Randy Orton, because he is always being interrupted these days.
Orton comes out a little more mean looking and serious than usual. He reminds Cody he would do anything to win and wouldn’t hesitate, but at Night of Champions he did hesitate with the punt. Cody didn’t hesitate, he respects it but he won’t forget it. Orton promises Cody to not squander this opportunity and kick John Cena’s ass.
Drew McIntyre is back!! He stands at the entrance and mocks them by saying “oh you hang up, oh no you hang up heehee”. He says Beta-male energy is taking over WWE, but the Alpha has returned. Drew says Orton lost a psychological battle months before Night of Champions. Cody has buttered him up for months like a politician and stabbing him in the back. Drew also talks about Cody targeting the surgically repaired back of Orton like a shark. McIntyre asks what has happened to Orton. Drew saved legends from Orton’s wrath only a few years ago, but now his legend is dead.
Drew wants Cody Rhodes to win at Summerslam and be the next WWE champion so he can be the one to rip it out of his hands. He won’t hesitate unlike somebody. Drew turns around into an RKO. Orton stares Cody down, hearing voices, before taking his leave.
Awesome segment. Drew McIntyre returning is a welcomed surprise and they continue to spin multiple storylines at the top of Smackdown’s division. I hope that Drew McIntyre winning the WWE title is the plan.
Shatter
After the bullshit in the tag division last week, Nick Aldis has a solution to appease the Wyatts. He forces 1 member of the 4 teams that were involved last week to team up and face them in an 8-man tag tonight. We have Berto representing Los Garza, Chris Sabin representing the Motor City Machine Guns, Johnny Gargano representing DIY and Montez Ford representing the Street Profits.
This was a fun tag match with some nice moments. Gargano and Lumis shared the ring and the former tried to remind them of their history together in NXT. That didn’t go to plan but it was a nice touch. Bitter rivals Gargano and Sabin showed some signs of tag team cohesion which was cool.
The story is 4 men from 4 teams who are usually rivals, trying to unite to take down the dominant and united Wyatt Sicks. They were unsuccessful as you would expect. Dexter Lumis had a good showing here. We didn’t see much in-ring from Joe Gacy and Uncle Howdy but they did good with what they did. Howdy doing great character work as always. I was most impressed by Erick Rowan here who had a great showing as an unstoppable monster, unable to be kept down for long.
Chris Sabin reaches for a tag to Gargano, but after seeing the menacing eyes of Rowan, Gargano is in fear and he drops down from the apron. Gargano watches on in horror as Sabin is destroyed with an Iron Claw slam.
Fun match with some good storytelling and a much needed win for the Wyatts after last week.

Predictably Good
No one was surprised when we saw Andrade & Rey Fenix vs Fraxiom and it was a good match. Although I wish Rey Fenix was being given a better solo push like his brother Penta, I do like the pairing of him and Andrade. I just question why you would put Fenix in the tag division but not with his bro.
This was fast, it was high work rate and it was action heavy. Fenix pulled out more of an RVD frog splash than a Guerrero one, he got crazy distance and impact on it. There were some awkward moments. Rey moonsaulting over Nathan Frazer looked rough. Rey tagging out to Andrade twice. However, it didn’t harm the overall quality too much.
Andrade hits The Message to win for his team. This was a lot of fun. Good work from all 4 lads.
Lowlights
Heatless
The first match of the night is a contender match for the women’s tag titles. The reluctant Charlotte Flair teams with Alexa Bliss to face B-Fab & Michin as well as Secret Hervice. Unfortunately, the crowd could NOT care less about this match. Incredibly quiet crowd, probably because they only really care about 1 out of 6 of these women.
The focus of the match is of course the relationship between Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair. Bliss requested this match and she is trying to help an arrogant Flair for some reason. I guess she has her reasons. Bliss is by far the best performer in this match, the only one getting any real crowd reactions.
This was okay, but it was pretty clunky and rough around the edges at times. The action just felt pretty basic and not really the focus of the match at all.
What I loved though was the ending angle of the match. So Flair “unknowingly” tagged out by sarcastically patting Bliss on the head. I don’t know how she didn’t know when the referee was right there to call it. Anyways, Bliss hits the Twisted Bliss and wins. After, Charlotte seemingly breaks character and hugs Bliss but very quickly re-composes herself and acts reserved again.
I loved that. I feel like we are finally getting a build to Charlotte having more to her personality for the first time in well over 5 years. A real human part of Charlotte was on display and I liked that a lot. More of this please.
Trishy Time
It is Tiffy Time as the WWE women’s champion is preparing for a match with Jade Cargill at Summerslam. Stratton has a match at Evolution before that though and she gets to handpick her opponent. However, she is interrupted by Jade Cargill.
Jade gives respect for Tiffany defeating Nia Jax last week. She warns Tiffany choosing wrong and not even reaching Summerslam as champion. Stratton reveals her surprise and out comes Trish Stratus! She still looks so damn good.
Tiffany Stratton officially offers Trish a title match at Evolution. Jade says it doesn’t matter who she faces at Summerslam, she will win. Stratton says she did not expect this, even though Tiffany explained at the start that she had an opportunity to choose her opponent. Stratton talks about the importance of Evolution and how women’s wrestling has progressed. She loved wrestling live in front of her kids, but she hasn’t been a champion in front of her kids. 8 time champion sounds good to her. Tiffy warns her that it won’t be easy, it isn’t the Attitude Era anymore.
Trish is up for the challenge. Tiffy says her catchphrase as all 3 women face off.
This was really awkward. Jade has been improving a lot in and out of the ring, but this was some of her worst mic work in a long time. She repeated lines and none of her delivery felt authentic. Trish dropped a fine but generic face legend promo. Tiffany looked the best here but all of this felt mega scripted and uncomfortable. I think this set up is incredibly weak and creates absolutely no buzz for the match because all there is to it is “hey look it’s Trish Stratus”. I’m sure the match will be good, but I think if Trish interrupted and challenged Tiffany this would have came off better.
Also, they were absolutely piping crowd noise into this segment. I don’t usually catch it too often, but it was so blatant here.
Edit: Literally 5 minutes later, we get a backstage interaction between Jade and Trish. Jade says “Hey, so I see that you got yourself a title match at Evolution.” YES JADE YOU WERE JUST THERE. Ugh this blatantly over-scripted production is so insulting, it makes me feel like a dumb idiot in the eyes of WWE.
Piped Noise
I just made a point out of it, but I am going it a full entry here in the lowlights because now I can’t not notice it. This entire show is full of piped in crowd noise. They do well to hide it during matches, or maybe they actually let it be natural. However, when people are making their entrances it sounds like a hairdryer.
The “this is awesome” chant during the Fraxiom tag match is incredibly forced. If you listen to the claps and chants, it does not match the crowd visuals at all. I hate it.
That is usually a tell-tale sign of piped noise. I hoped this trend would be out of WWE with Kevin Dunn but I guess not.
MFT
The main event saw Jacob Fatu and Jimmy Uso defeat Solo Sikoa and JC Mateo. It was fine, a very average TV tag match. The heels get heat on Jimmy, Fatu tags in and runs wild, he pins the US champion to prove he deserves a rematch. It was paint by numbers and if I’m honest, pretty boring.
Fatu tries to take Solo through the announce table, but Tala Tonga & Tonga Loa come out to save Solo. They beat up Jimmy. Solo spikes Jacob. Tala puts Fatu through the announce table to end the show.
Solo called these his MFT’s in a pre-recorded promo. My Family Tree. Doesn’t quite have the same ring as Bloodline but fair enough.
Nothing bad really but a rather flat way to end Smackdown. The first 2 hour Smackdown ended up being a bit flat overall and lacking excitement.
No Singles?
4 tag matches and no singles matches is certainly a choice. I feel like Triple H has been called out a lot for poor tag wrestling focus so he said “lets-uhh put-uhh all of-uhh our matches-uhh on Smackdown-uhh as tag matches-uhh.” It is just a bit ridiculous. There is no variety. Sure there are two different versions of tag matches, but I think having a whole show as one format is poor booking. Unless of course it was an event that required it to be so like a tag tournament.
Triple H, what is going on back there? Are you okay? Please be okay. I want 2022-2024 WWE again.
