The rumours were true. After the collapse of the wrestling landscape, there were talks that a handful of promotions would hard reset the industry. After a private meeting with Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan, I have acquired all the rights, licences and intellectual property for the National Wrestling Alliance, and that folks should stay tuned for an upcoming Announcement Party.
The announcement party is held at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Houston, Texas. I introduce the man who will be helping me preserve the legacy of the NWA. The General Manager, Mr Theodore Long. Teddy reveals the NWA have have signed a deal with Amazon Prime to air episodes of their new show, World Class Championship Wrestling, paying homage to the former Houston promotion. The debut episode of NWA: WCCW will take place at this arena on the 11th of December.
Cult of Personality plays, CM Punk appears accompanied by AJ Lee. Punk tells us that all non-title matches will be 30 minutes and championship bouts will be 60 minutes, unless specified otherwise. He announces a 16-man tournament to crown a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion, which will culminate at NWA’s first PPV event post-revival, Built To Destroy. More details on the tournament and the PPV in the coming weeks. CM Punk invites some friends of his onto the stage who will also be a part of the NWA. FTR, Ricky Starks & Mercedes Mone all get mini entrances as the first announced names of the NWA roster.
Ahead of the NWA: WCCW Press Conference, also held at the FWCC in Houston, more names revealed to have signed include Walter (FKA Gunther), MJF, Christian Cage, Jordynne Grace & Tiffany Stratton.
CM Punk opens the conference, excited about a new company that he will help lead into prosperity. Punk is interrupted by Taz, who questions Punk’s ability as a leader and references his controversial reputation. Punk tells Taz he can find out all about his reputation by stepping in the ring with him. Taz laughs, he is quite happy to be retired, but he knows a guy who will happily do the work for him. He tells Punk to be prepared for a fight on the debut episode of World Class Championship Wrestling.
Ian Riccaboni & Nigel McGuinness, the main announce team for NWA, introduce former NWA women’s champion and wrestling legend, Jazz. She hypes up women’s wrestling before introducing 2 other former NWA women’s champions. Thunder Rosa & Kamille. She reveals they will go head to head on the debut episode, the winner getting a shot at the newly designed NWA World Women’s title. Thunder Rosa cuts a Spanish promo saying she does not fear Kamille. Kamille simply says “I will make you fear me.” Jazz will be refereeing the contest.
FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood) announce the World Tag League, a 6 team tournament with each team wrestling each other once. 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, -1 points if you get disqualified. The top 2 teams of the league will face off for the newly designed NWA World Tag Team Championships. FTR declare themselves as the greatest tag team of all time and the NWA should hand them the tag titles now. Paul Ellering steps out and disagrees, he represents a tag team that he knows FTR remember and have not defeated before. Akam & Rezar emerge and beat up FTR. Security emerges and demands the Authors of Pain leave.
Mercedes Mone is excited to be part of the NWA women’s division and looks forward to wrestling either Kamille or Rosa for the vacant title. She is cut off by The Vendetta, Deonna Purrazzo & Taya Valkyrie, who are insulted that Mone is so confident she will be the other number 1 contender. Deonna says it could be her, Taya said it could be her, they both say it will definitely be one of them. If Mercedes is so confident, maybe she should prove it. They close in on her, but Jordynne Grace runs out and stands alongside Mercedes, backing off The Vendetta.
The conference comes to an end with GM Teddy Long who’s final announcement is the PPV calendar. There will be 4 PPV events, but in-between those shows there will be SuperCard events dubbed NWA Power, which will run similar to Clash of the Champions back in the day. Each Power show will be named after the theme song used for the event. The 4 PPVs are as follows:
