WWE Planning Events To Go Up Against AEW

AEW Worlds End 2025 is set for December 27 at the NOW Arena in Chicago. WWE may respond by scheduling John Cena’s retirement match on the same night, directly challenging AEW’s year-end pay-per-view.

According to Bryan Alvarez, Cena’s farewell match was originally planned for early December at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. However, WWE is now considering moving it to December 27 to compete head-to-head with AEW Worlds End 2025. Dave Meltzer added that the shift from December 13 to December 27 is “certainly the story going around.”

Industry insiders believe this is part of WWE’s strategy in the WWE vs AEW rivalry. The move aims to weaken AEW’s chances of securing a higher-value media rights deal. Meltzer explained that WWE wants to elevate TNA Wrestling as the “controlled” No. 2 promotion, boxing AEW out of future growth. He stated, “They just want Tony Khan out of the box. If AEW’s ratings stay strong, they’ll get a bigger renewal and become highly profitable. WWE wants to make sure this is the last contract.”

As previously reported, WWE also plans to counter AEW All Out 2025. The current working plan is John Cena vs Brock Lesnar on September 20, the same night as AEW’s major pay-per-view event.

WWE has yet to officially announce the date for Cena’s final match or confirm a December edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event. For now, Cena’s next confirmed match is against Logan Paul at WWE Clash in Paris on Sunday, August 31.

Editor Note: In my opinion, wrestling needs competition. I sat through the many years with WWE having no competition and it was bloody awful (Roman Reigns and dog food anyone?) so we need more companies. It ensures everyone is on their toes and giving their best. It also gives more opportunities to wrestlers. Let’s see what the future holds.
